DATE AND TIME

Tue, 19 June 2018

8:30 AM – 5:00 PM EDT

LOCATION

Ottawa City Hall

Jean Pigott Place

Ottawa, ON K1P 1J1

DESCRIPTION

We believe everyone should be able to use the internet to better their lives and fully participate as citizens. This requires digital access: the means to reliably connect to the internet, understand its uses and implications, feel safe online, and engage with how the internet is governed and develops.

Please join us for Digital Access Day, a day-long conference to dive into these issues, including connectivity in Indigenous communities, digital literacy, research on the digital divide, and the challenges of making internet and connected devices affordable for everyone.

Speakers include Peerio Chief Technology Officer, Florencia Herra-Vega, CIRA CEO, Byron Holland and Ken Sanderson, CEO of Broadband Communications North, a not-for-profit Indigenous-run Internet Service Provider in northern Manitoba.

This event is for all those who think the internet is important enough that everyone needs to have access to it.

This includes:

~people facing barriers to digital access who want to share their perspectives and join work to make things better

~digital rights advocates

~policy-makers

~civil servants working to digitize government services without leaving anyone behind

~civil society organizations working within vulnerable communities that face barriers to digital access

~tech industry professionals who want to ensure that people can access online services and feel secure using them

~civic tech enthusiasts

This event is free and includes lunch. It has been made possible thanks to funding from CIRA’s Community Investment Program, and our sponsors the Internet Society, Shopify and Intuit.

From 5:30-7:30pm we are continuing the conversation at Shopify’s offices (150 Elgin St), across the street from City Hall. We hope to see you there!

Digital Access Day is being organized by three organizations on the front-line of ensuring digital access: National Capital FreeNet, CompuCorps, and the Internet Society Canada Chapter.
