Solar Energy FAQ
What is solar power? It is the conversion of sunlight into electricity; one of the most prevalent methods is photovoltaic (PV), which employs the use of solar panels to collect sunlight.
Is solar power pollution-free? Yes, solar power is clean and does not emit any greenhouse gasses. It is a source of renewable energy, as the supply of sunlight is abundant.
How much does it cost to install a solar panel? It depends on the size and the type of system you want. For more information, you should contact a local dealer to schedule a site visit.
Can I earn money by generating solar power? There is a large initial investment to install solar panels, but it may pay off over time.
The amount you earn is dependant on several factors, including the size and type of system that you install and local programs. If you have a large enough system, you may be able to completely power your home and eliminate electrical expenses. If there is any extra energy generated, some electrical companies will buy that excess electricity or credit your electricity bill.
In Ontario, the microFit program encourages the production of solar energy and you can enter into a contract at a fixed-price for your excess electricity. For more information on microFit you can visit: http://microfit.powerauthority.on.ca/
Where can I install a solar panel? There are several options on where to install solar panels, including on a roof and on the ground. This all depends on the building structure/stability and local laws. Also, many cottage-owners are using solar power for off-grid energy.
How does bad weather affect a solar panel? Cloud, rain and other weather systems can temporarily reduce the effectiveness of the solar panel. However, as long as there is sun, the panel should collect some energy.
What happens if there is snow on the solar panel? Snow can cover the surface of the solar panel and temporarily reduce the production of energy. But many panels are built at an angle, so snow will melt and slide off.
How many years does a solar panel last? The life expectancy of a solar panel is ranges from 30-40 years. Over time solar panels will lose its effectiveness, but deterioration is an extremely slow process. |
